2017 Board Members

March 28, 2017

There was some changing of the guard at the recent election meeting.  First and foremost, Gera Exire LaTour has stepped aside as treasurer; the club will definitely miss Gera on the board, and wishes to send a hearty “thank you” her way for her years of excellent bookkeeping!  Stepping in as club treasurer is Jon Hunter, and joining him on the board as new members-at-large are Alex Carlson and John Vircks.  We appreciate the new board members offering their time to the club, and also want to thank Paul Illa and Dan Dugan, who both stepped aside after two-year terms as members-at-large.

If you’ve seen the wonderful new club banner, you can thank Paul Illa the next time you see him, as it was mostly through his work (and Dave and Audrey Royer’s work on the logo) that we achieved that.

John Longballa was re-elected president, Matt Weide was re-elected vice-president, and Dave Royer was re-elected secretary.  Dave Matson and Chris Smith are half-way through two-year terms as members-at-large, and with no change in the presidency, Brett Glenna remains the president emeritus on the board.

Chief Chili Pepper wants YOU

March 13, 2017

You made some great beer and some great chili–bring them both on the 18th and possibly win some prizes.

You made one or the other–bring it on the 18th and possibly win a prize.

You made neither, but love both–show up on the 18th and possibly win a door prize.

You have never attended a meeting, but are curious–show up on the 18th and be guaranteed that a current member will introduce him/herself and pour you a beer.

You have been thinking that you would like to help with the club’s activities, and you have some great ideas–show up on the 18th and run for a board position. The positions to be voted on are President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two At-Large positions.

Chief Chili Pepper could go home with you if you have the best chili.

The club is providing the bowls, napkins, and spoons–you provide the hunger and the thirst.

Bring extra full bottles to exchange for other brewers’ bottles!

Saturday, March 18th, noon to 4:00.

Community Gathering Space, 514 Lowry Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN

MHBA Apparel Order

March 13, 2017

It’s been a very long time since the Minnesota Home Brewers Association has offered apparel. With the new logo, it’s time once again!

We are offering t-shirts, long-sleeve t-shirts, Dickies work shirts in both men’s and women’s cuts along with a hooded sweatshirt!

We may order a couple extra, but please don’t assume there will be any.

If you are interested in some club apparel, this is your chance! You can choose to have your apparel shipped directly to you, or if you want to save a couple bucks, you can pick it up at a club event.

We will be accepting orders until April 5th. At that point, all the orders will be printed and either shipped to you or we will pick them up from the printer and start bringing them to club events.

If you would like to have your apparel shipped to you, use the order form to have things shipped directly to you.

If you want to pick up your apparel, use the group pickup order form.

Questions? Send them to the club secretary.

An update on the club’s activity at HomeBrewCon 2017

March 11, 2017

During the biggest homebrew party of the year at AHA HomebrewCon (aka Club Night), we want to showcase some of the finest homebrew beers, meads and cider from our club’s amazing members…this means YOU!

If you think you can create a brew that is ready for prime time and you would enjoy the honor of having your beer being tasted and appreciated by fellow homebrewers, NOW is the time to act. THE MHBA WANTS YOUR BREW!!! We will be conducting a “Taste-in” in early June (just before the conference) to make sure we don’t pour infected beer or some other “strange brew”.

By the way…kegs are the preferred container, as the beer can be self-served at our booth. However, we are thinking about some options the help those who don’t presently keg but want to brew for HomebrewCon.

If you can brew and help represent the MHBA, email Dave Matson, chair of the club’s HomeBrewCon activities so we can get the ball rolling.

Cheers!

2017 Big Brew for National Homebrew Day

February 28, 2017

Saturday, May 6th we celebrate the American Homebrewers Association’s annual Big Brew for National Homebrew Day.  Many of us will gather and brew individually at Lift Bridge Brewing beginning at 11:00; any recipe is welcome, but please consider brewing one of the two suggested recipes found on the AHA site.  Brewing will be outside, except for those who were the first twelve to sign up.

Homebrew is welcome, and Lift Bridge will have mash/sparge water available, as well as hoses for chillers.  Please remember to purchase much of Lift Bridge’s delicious wares!  At 4:00, Lift Bridge will be distributing Oktoberfest wort, but you must purchase your wort ahead of time for $5 at Eventbrite.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1267977476626506/

If you can’t make it to Lift Bridge, then please consider hosting a brewing open house on May 6th.  Let us know that you’re doing so, and we can spread the word to club members; this is a great opportunity to meet other members, see other brewers’ set-ups, share techniques, and to participate in the national simultaneous noon toast.  Please let us know your name and address, what time you are opening the doors, what people can bring, and whether they should bring a brewing set-up.

Let’s make this a day where club members are in personal contact with other members, regardless of location!

2017 Bowling and Homebrew

February 27, 2017

Bring the family (and the homebrew!) to St. Francis Bowling Center in Saint Paul on Sunday, March 26th, from 12:30-3:00.  This family-friendly club event is free for all members in good standing; the only cost to you (besides possibly your pride) is $2/person for shoes.  Children and homebrew are welcome!  A lane or two will have bumper buddies (gutter guards) for anyone who needs them.  There’s no need to be there right at 12:30; please bring some snacks, stop by when you’re able, roll a few balls, and quaff a few homebrews.

This is one of the last of the German-Catholic basement bowling alleys that were quite prevalent in the second half of the previous century.  We have the entire place and all six lanes to ourselves during our rented time.  There will be door prizes, and a prize for the best homebrew.  The St. Francis Bowling Center is located in the St. Francis school building at 426 S. Osceola Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55102, just one block north of the intersection of Randolph and West 7th.

Find more information about the location on their website.

See you there!
